A conveyor belt is a highly effective way of moving goods, products and materials, and it saves a great deal of time and cost. Conveyor belts come in many lengths, widths and materials, and in horizontal, vertical and inclined configurations, chosen according to the product and the available space. As with any industrial equipment, safety rules must be observed. The most important points are:
- Installing and splicing these belts requires expertise and must be done by experienced people. Never attempt the installation yourself.
- The conveyor must have guarded controls and, like any other machine, must be fitted with an emergency stop.
- Operators working with the machine must be fully trained and know how to use it.
- Do not stand too close to the conveyor while it is running.
- Fit guards over the hazardous parts of the machine to improve safety.
- Choose a clear route for the installation, away from heavy foot traffic, so it does not obstruct other work.
- Repairs must be carried out by the installing company or by qualified people, and nobody should be working on the machine while it is being repaired. Inspection and testing must be carried out regularly.
- Belt speed must be controlled automatically.
- The type and material of the belt must be selected to suit the products and the working environment, so that failure, tearing and wear are minimised.
- Do not walk under the conveyor, especially at hazardous points, and make sure everyone on site is aware of the risk.
- To avoid physical strain on operators, set the conveyor at a height suited to them so their work is not slowed down.
